3. Notocrypta paralysos asawa (The Common Banded Demon)

Number: 3
Family: Hesperiidae
Sub-Family : Hesperiinae
Species: Notocrypta paralysos asawa Fruhstorfer, 1911
Common name(s): The Common Banded Demon
Photography location: Tam Dao foothills (Vinh Phuc Prov.)

The genus Notocrypta (the "Demons") comprises 13 species, among them 4 have been recorded in Vietnam: N. paralysos asawa, N. clavata theba, N. curvifascia curvifascia & N. feisthamelii alysos (Monastyrskii & Devyatkin, 2016). All are blackish brown species with an oblique white band and white spot(s) on FW.

N. paralysos is very wide-ranging species, known from India to Indonesia, and north to Japan. This is one of the Hesperidae I encounter the most in my habitual butt hunting grounds around Hanoi.

Notocrypta paralysos asawa, Tam Dao foothills (June 2016)
The white dot in space 4 of FW can be present or not

N. clavata is very similar but the band is not elbowed (right-angled indentation) on the inner margin at vein 2 as seen in N. paralysos. It is also not strongly notched on the outer margin at vein 3 and spot 4 is absent.
